Article Synopsis
  • Herpes zoster (shingles) is caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), affecting about 10-20% of adults over 50 and posing a 30% risk for the general population, especially during winter and spring.
  • The study analyzed 50 cases of herpes zoster from October 2020 to April 2021, using PCR to detect VZV in skin lesions by amplifying specific genes (gpB and MCP) and sequencing the results.
  • Results showed high similarity to known VZV sequences, identifying six genetic variants and eight single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that caused changes in the gpB protein, with the findings recorded in NCB
