Brown adipose tissue (BAT) contributes to energy homeostasis via nonshivering thermogenesis. The BAT is densely innervated by the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and activity of pre-autonomic neurons modulates the sympathetic outflow. Leptin, an adipocyte hormone, alters energy homeostasis and thermogenesis of BAT via several neuronal circuits; however, the cellular effects of leptin on interscapular BAT (iBAT)-related neurons in the hypothalamus remain to be determined.

The main objective of this case-cohort-type observational study conducted at different Surgical Departments of the Charité-Universitätsmedizin in Berlin was to evaluate the sequential use concept first described by Systagenix Wound Management in 2007. Fifty-two patients with different wound healing by secondary intention were treated for 7 weeks at the Charité-Universitätsmedizin in Berlin. A multidisciplinary team worked together to reach consensus in wound assessment; in classification of infection status according to the criteria described by European Wound Management Association (EWMA); in treatment protocol and on dressings to be used to 'cover' wounds.

Signal transducers and activators of transcription (STATs) are critical components of cytokine signaling pathways. STAT5A and STAT5B (STAT5), the most promiscuous members of this family, are highly expressed in specific populations of hypothalamic neurons in regions known to mediate the actions of cytokines in the regulation of energy balance. To test the hypothesis that STAT5 signaling is essential to energy homeostasis, we used Cre-mediated recombination to delete the Stat5 locus in the CNS.
