This study investigates the formation of amorphous tetravalent metal hydroxides, M(OH), based on the structural analysis by small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SWAXS) and on the electrical potential charge near the surface of M(OH) particles. The amorphous zirconium hydroxide solid phases that aged in NaCl and CaCl solutions at 25 °C exhibited a hierarchical structure consisting of primary particles of a few nanometers in size and their aggregates more than 100 nm in size. The SWAXS profiles suggested that the size of the primary particles depends on the ionic strength and electrolytes in the sample solutions.

The neutral polysaccharides LCPS-1 and LCPS-2 play functional roles in the cell wall of the lactic acid bacterium Lacticaseibacillus paracasei strain Shirota YIT 9029 (LcS; formerly Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota YIT 9029), which has long been used as a probiotic food product. Studies have shown that LCPS-1 is associated with the immunomodulatory functions of LcS. We hypothesized that the structure of LCPS-1 is crucial for elucidating the mechanism of action of LcS on host immune responses and aimed to solve the undetermined primary structure of LCPS-1.

Quinoa (), native to the Andean region of South America, has been recognized as a potentially important crop in terms of global food and nutrition security since it can thrive in harsh environments and has an excellent nutritional profile. Even though challenges of analyzing the complex and heterogeneous allotetraploid genome of quinoa have recently been overcome, with the whole genome-sequencing of quinoa and the creation of genotyped inbred lines, the lack of technology to analyze gene function is a major limiting factor in quinoa research. Here, we demonstrate that two virus-mediated transient expression techniques, virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) and virus-mediated overexpression (VOX), can be used in quinoa.

We investigated the effects of jammer-type racing swimsuits (RS) on swimming performance during arm-stroke-only (pull) and whole-body stroke (swim) in 25-m front-crawl with maximal effort. Twelve well-trained male collegiate swimmers wore RS and a conventional swimsuit (CS) and performed three tests: pull, swim, and pull using the system to measure active drag (MAD pull). Swimming velocity and intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) were determined in all tests.
