Incidence and prevalence of infection with Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Prospective study in healthy individuals exposed to ticks.

The seroprevalence of human granulocytic anaplasmosis (former human granulocytic ehrlichiosis, HGE) has been documented in several studies, but little data exists on incidence rates in healthy individuals. In a prospective study, we tested 125 healthy adults (mean age 43 years)--workers of the Bialowieza Primeval Forest National Park, north-eastern Poland--for Anaplasma phagocytophilum IgG antibodies using an indirect immunofluorescence antibody assay, and for Borrelia burgdorferi IgG with ELISA in a 12-month interval. The data concerning clinical symptoms consistent with human granulocytic anaplasmosis were collected using a standardized questionnaire.

[Hydrocolonic sonography in the diagnostics of ulcerative colitis].

The present study was to assess the diagnostic value of hydrocolonic sonography in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). 32 patients with clinical diagnosis of UC or with the symptoms of the disease were examined with hydrocolonic sonography, and subsequently with double-contrast enema radiography. 18 healthy subjects were examined as controls.

[Exposure to toxocariasis and tularemia among workers at Białowieza National Park].

Everyday contact of the workers of Białowieza sanctuary with animals may create a risk of infection by microorganisms attacking animals. The reported study was undertaken for carrying out an epidemiological analysis of tularemia and toxocarosis in this group of workers. Tularaemia infection was not found in then.

[Central pontine myelinolysis in an eighteen year old woman].

Central pontine myelinolysis is sporadically diagnosed disease. The disease has fulminant course and fatal prognosis. Myelinolysis is known for 40 years, but its cause remain still unclear and therapy is not established.

[Clinical picture of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection].

In humans Mycoplasma pneumoniae is mostly responsible for severe diseases of respiratory system, but it can also cause symptoms from other organs. Two cases of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection are described in this paper. Additionally the differences between clinical courses and diagnostic difficulties were also discussed.
