Sex-specific effect of P2Y purinergic receptor on glucose metabolism during acute inflammation.

The sex of an animal impacts glucose sensitivity, but little information is available regarding the mechanisms causing that difference, especially during acute inflammation. We examined sex-specific differences in the role of the P2Y receptor (P2YR) in glucose flux with and without LPS challenge. Male and female wild-type and P2YR knockout mice (P2YR) were injected with LPS or saline and glucose tolerance tests (GTT) were performed.

Mounting evidence suggests that human motor control uses dynamic primitives, attractors of dynamic neuromechanical systems that require minimal central supervision. However, advantages for control may be offset by compromised versatility. Extending recent results showing that humans could not sustain discrete movements as duration decreased, this study tested whether smoothly rhythmic movements could be maintained as duration increased.

A synergy-based hand control is encoded in human motor cortical areas.

How the human brain controls hand movements to carry out different tasks is still debated. The concept of synergy has been proposed to indicate functional modules that may simplify the control of hand postures by simultaneously recruiting sets of muscles and joints. However, whether and to what extent synergic hand postures are encoded as such at a cortical level remains unknown.

Differential diagnosis of cardiovascular symptoms: setting the expectations for the ultrasound examination and medical education.

Within the past several decades, dramatic changes have been made in the field of diagnostic imaging. Many of these changes have been with ultrasound, which has been transformative in the efficiency and accuracy of diagnostics. Emergency physicians, intensivists, and other acute care clinicians are using and relying on critical care ultrasound imaging to better triage and diagnose patients at the point of care.
