Protein-O-mannosylation (POM) is a form of O-glycosylation that is ubiquitous and has been studied extensively throughout in fungi and animals. The key glycosyltransferase, protein O-mannosyltransferase (PMT), a member of family GT-39, is also found in over 3,800 bacterial genomes but has only been minimally examined from prokaryotes. In prokaryotes POM has only been investigated in terms of pathogenicity (in Mycobacterium tuberculosis) even though there are far more non-pathogenic bacteria that appear to carry out POM.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is marked by genetic mutations occurring in the DMD gene, which is widely expressed in the cardiovascular system. In addition to developing cardiomyopathy, patients with DMD have been reported to be susceptible to the development of symptomatic hypotension, although the mechanisms are unclear. Analysis of single-cell RNA sequencing data has identified potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily Q member 5 (KCNQ5) and possibly ryanodine receptor 2 (RyR2) as potential candidate hypotension genes whose expression is significantly upregulated in the vascular smooth muscle cells of DMD mutant mice.

The same symptoms also caused the deaths of two other birds from the same flock. The bird seemed dull and depressed during a clinical examination, had ruffled feathers, a tilted head and circling.
