Tetrafunctionalized resorcinarene cavitands (4-6) have been synthesized starting from tetrakis(bromomethyl)cavitand 3. New cavitand-based cation ligands with (carbamoylmethyl)phosphonate (CMP) and -phosphine oxide (CMPO) moieties (8a,b and 9a,b) were prepared via two different routes in good (45-86%) overall yields. The ligands (8a,b and 9b) are very effective europium extractants.

The genomes of different derivatives of Marek's disease virus (MDV) strain CVI-988, a low oncogenic isolate of a serotype 1 MDV, were analyzed by restriction enzyme analyses to detect whether alterations occurred after passages in cell culture. DNA molecules of strain 988 isolated directly from blood cells contained mainly two copies of the 132-bp repeat sequence previously reported within BamH1-H and -D fragment as previously reported for more virulent MDV strains. Although a minority of virus particles showed repeat amplification was already at the fifth passage level, amplification mainly occurred between passages 17 and 34 in cell culture.

Two mutant CV1988 Marek's disease virus (MDV) strains were developed in which a part of ORF L1 was replaced by lacZ with the SV40 early promoter. These mutant strains, CVIL1LacZ-A and -B, were inoculated into chickens to test the hypothesis that ORF L1 is involved in the induction and/or maintenance of latency. Mutant virus could be reisolated from lymphocytes obtained from chickens during both the lytic and latent phase of infection, indicating that ORF L1 is not essential for the induction and/or maintenance of latency or the reactivation from latency.

An indirect double-antibody sandwich (IDAS) enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using milk samples was developed to identify cows infected with bovine leukemia virus (BLV). Two monoclonal antibodies (McAbs) were used. One, which was directed against BLV core protein p24, was used to coat ELISA plates; the other was used to prepare a horseradish peroxidase (HRP) conjugate directed against bovine immunoglobulin.

A laser-based photoacoustic method was used for determination of ethylene (C(2)H(4)) production of emasculated orchid (Cymbidium) flowers in a flow-through system. The laser photoacoustic equipment consisted of a line-tuneable CO(2) laser in conjunction with a single-pass resonant acoustic cell. The minimum detection limit of the system for C(2)H(4) in air was 0.
