Physical aspects of load distribution within the femoral head beneath the "Resurfacing-Prosthesis" are analyzed. The cup prosthesis eliminates stress from areas which--according to the bone structure--are weight bearing areas and induces shearing forces within the femoral neck. Tangential forces appear in addition to increasing marginal stress.

A four year follow up trial of 109 cases of the Wagner type of prosthetic surface replacement has been undertaken. It has been found that this type of arthroplasty has been associated with a higher rate of loosening that the conventional total hip replacement. This loosening mainly affects the femoral component.

Theoretical aspects on the influence of the shape of the human femoral neck in terms of tension intensifying slots are presented. Static stress is calculated. It is shown that tension in the cranial periphery of the neck is twice as high as expected.

We have attempt to define experimental conditions which would overcome or minimize some of the well known functional limitations of isolated single pass kidney preparations. Rat kidneys were perfused with a Krebs-Henseleit solution containing the gelatine derivative Haemaccel as colloid. Perfusion was initiated in situ via the mesenteric artery.
