[Psychosomatics in rheumatology].

Psychosocial factors influence the course and the outcome of chronic somatic diseases. This is also valid for rheumatic diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthropathies, systemic collagen vascular diseases, and fibromyalgia syndrome. The article summarises the evidence-based findings and it illustrates possibilities of psychosomatic treatment in rheumatic diseases by means of three case reports.

[Psychosocial distress and symptoms of single mothers and their children in a large community sample].

Objectives: As in other western countries the proportion of single parent families in Germany is growing. International studies showed lower socioeconomic status and elevated psychic distress in single mothers as well as increased problem behavior in their children. This study was performed to make up for the lack of epidemiologic investigations on this issue in Germany.

Background: The proportion of single mothers in western countries is continuously growing. In contrast to other western countries, support programs in Germany especially for single mothers are rare. This study identifies for the first time in Germany within a large epidemiological sample different subgroups of higher distressed single mothers as important potential target groups for psychosocial support interventions.

[On the effects of psychoanalytic oriented psychotherapy - an inpatient multicenter study].

Whereas the efficacy of inpatient treatment in socalled psychosomatic rehabilitation clinics in Germany has been well researched and documented, studies involving large samples on the efficacy of inpatient treatment in acute hospitals are lacking. A multicentered retrospective study involving clinics for psychotherapy at three separate universities was conducted on a sample of n=495. The patients were treated on an inpatient basis between April 1990 and July 1998 in one of the clinics.

Radioimmunochemical quantification of Gi alpha in right and left ventricles from patients with ischaemic and dilated cardiomyopathy and predominant left ventricular failure.

An increase of Gi alpha-related pertussis toxin substrates has been observed in the failing myocardium. In order to quantify the protein expression of Gi alpha directly, we developed a fast radioimmunoassay using the iodinated synthetic peptide 125I-KENLKDCGLF. beta-adrenoceptors were studied with 125I-cyanopindolol binding for comparison.
