Background: Healthcare-associated infections are the most common complication for patients in acute care. A clinical practice framework developed in the United Kingdom (UK) standardised AT practice to reduce potential infection risk.

The power of vivid experience in hand hygiene compliance.

In recent years, explicit behavioural theories have been used in some research into hand hygiene behaviour. One of the most prominent of these has been the theory of planned behaviour (TPB). In this qualitative study aimed at increasing understanding of infection prevention practice in the acute care setting, TPB was identified as a suitable framework for the emergence of new insights that have the potential to improve the power of existing education and training.

Surgical-site infections after orthopaedic surgery: statewide surveillance using linked administrative databases.

Prospective surveillance programmes to monitor the incidence of surgical-site infection (SSI) in patients who have had orthopaedic implant surgery can be difficult to implement due to limited human and technical resources. In addition, prolonged patient follow-up, up to one year, may be required. Traditional methods of surveillance can be enhanced by using administrative databases to assist in case finding and facilitate overall surveillance activities.

A comparison of two methods for identifying surgical site infections following orthopaedic surgery.

Many infection control practitioners (ICPs) dedicate a significant amount of time and resources to surveillance of surgical site infections (SSIs). Alternative surveillance methods need to be explored to reflect the changes to the healthcare system and the increasing economic constraints placed on infection control units. This study was undertaken to compare two methods of identifying SSIs in orthopaedic surgery.
