Article Synopsis
  • A pilot study aimed to assess the effects of green tea on recovery after colon cancer surgery, comparing it to water consumption among patients.
  • The trial involved 18 patients who were randomly assigned to either a green-tea-drinking or water-drinking group, with the primary focus on the time to first defecation post-surgery.
  • Results showed no significant differences in recovery outcomes, such as time to first defecation, length of hospital stay, or incidence of complications between the two groups, indicating both drinks were safe options.

A 66-year-old man presented to our institution with a positive fecal occult blood test and lower abdominal pain. Although a tumor was found in the sigmoid colon, biopsy and imaging studies failed to enable the diagnosis of the cancer, and the patient underwent surgery for treatment and diagnosis. The tumor had two distinct areas with differing features shown both histopathologically and on imaging; it was thus diagnosed as a leiomyosarcoma of the sigmoid colon with a pleomorphic component.
