Neurologic events occur in up to 18% of patients with continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The current form of the LVAD equipment is not suited to serve patients who are impaired by a stroke. By creating an assistance device for the LVAD equipment, we have been able to greatly improve the quality of life and self-dependence of a hemiplegic LVAD patient.

Penicillins are used universally in both human and veterinary medicine. The European Union (EU) has established maximum residue levels (MRLs) for most ss-lactam antibiotics in milk and animal tissues and included them in the National Residue Monitoring Programs. In this study, a novel method is described for the determination and confirmation of eight penicillins in porcine tissues, milk and animal feed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe performances of four different mass spectrometers [triple-quadrupole (TQ), time-of-flight (ToF), quadrupole ToF (Q-ToF) and ion trap (IT)] for the detection of the marine lipophilic toxins pectenotoxin-2 (PTX2) and okadaic acid (OA) were investigated. The spectral data obtained with the different mass spectrometric analyzers were used to propose fragmentation schemes for PTX2 in the positive electrospray mode and for OA in the negative electrospray mode. TQ data were used to obtain product ions, while ToF and Q-ToF-MS produced accurate mass data of the precursor ion and product ions, respectively.

Problems associated with the differences in reactivity towards derivatisation (EPM) and limited stability of the derived products (IVM, DOR, ABA) may seriously hamper the applicability of the method and the reliability of the obtained results. A study was performed to obtain more insight in this derivatisation process from an organic chemistry point of view.

Both UV detection at 230 nm and MS detection were applied. Virginiamycin M1 was extracted from animal feeds with ethyl acetate after wetting of the feed with water followed by clean-up on Sep-Pak silica gel and OASIS HLB cartridges.
