Changes in primary productivity have the potential to substantially alter food webs, with positive outcomes for some species and negative outcomes for others. Understanding the environmental context and species traits that give rise to these divergent outcomes is a major challenge to the generality of both theoretical and applied ecology. In aquatic systems, nutrient-mediated eutrophication has led to major declines in species diversity, motivating us to seek terrestrial analogues using a large-mammal system across 598 000 km of the Canadian boreal forest.

The expansion of moose into southern British Columbia caused the decline and extirpation of woodland caribou due to their shared predators, a process commonly referred to as apparent competition. Using an adaptive management experiment, we tested the hypothesis that reducing moose to historic levels would reduce apparent competition and therefor recover caribou populations. Nested within this broad hypothesis were three specific hypotheses: (1) sport hunting could be used to substantially reduce moose numbers to an ecological target; (2) wolves in this ecosystem were primarily limited by moose abundance; and (3) caribou were limited by wolf predation.

Carotenoids produce many of the red, orange and yellow signal traits of birds, and individuals must trade off utilizing carotenoids for physiological processes versus ornamentation. Proximate mechanisms regulating this trade-off are poorly understood, despite their importance for expression of color signals. Corticosterone (CORT) may play a significant mechanistic role in signal expression because it mobilizes energy substrates and influences foraging behavior.

The behaviour literature is full of studies showing that animals in every taxon balance the probability of acquiring food with the risk of being preyed upon. While interactions between food and predators clearly operate at an individual scale, population-scale studies have tended to focus on only one factor at a time. Consequently, interactive (or 'synergistic') effects of food and predators on whole populations have only twice before been experimentally demonstrated in mammals.

Thirty two patients with proven chronic bacterial prostatitis were treated with ciprofloxacin 500 mg twice daily orally for four weeks. The causative organisms, cultured from prostatic fluid were Enterobacteriaceae (19 patients), enterococci (9), staphylococci (4), streptococci (3), non-fermentative Gram-negative rods (2) and anaerobic bacteria (9). Nineteen patients had pure cultures, 13 mixed cultures.
