Cytokines are small proteins that are critical for controlling the growth and activity of hematopoietic cells by binding to cell surface receptors and transmitting signals across membranes. The β common (βc) cytokine receptor family, consisting of the granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), interleukin (IL)-3, and IL-5 cytokine receptors, is an architype of the heterodimeric cytokine receptor systems. We now know that signaling by cytokine receptors is not always an "all or none" phenomenon.

Development and Clinical Validation of Visual Inspection With Acetic Acid Application-Artificial Intelligence Tool Using Cervical Images in Screen-and-Treat Visual Screening for Cervical Cancer in South India: A Pilot Study.

Purpose: The burden of cervical cancer in India is enormous, with more than 60,000 deaths being reported in 2020. The key intervention in the WHO's global strategy for the elimination of cervical cancer is to aim for the treatment and care of 90% of women diagnosed with cervical lesions. The current screen-and-treat approach as an option for resource-limited health care systems where screening of the cervix with visual inspection with acetic acid application (VIA) is followed by immediate ablative treatment by nurses in the case of a positive test.

The Significance of Rhabdomyolysis Secondary to Hypothyroidism.

Rhabdomyolysis is a rare but serious complication of hypothyroidism, typically associated with precipitating factors such as medication interactions, strenuous exercise, and illicit drug use. We present a unique case of rhabdomyolysis in an 89-year-old female due to severe hypothyroidism without identifiable precipitating factors. Laboratory results revealed markedly elevated creatine kinase (CK) levels and acute kidney injury (AKI).

Metformin Toxicity Leading to Severe Refractory Hyperkalemia and Metabolic Acidosis: A Case Report.

Metformin is a widely prescribed, oral, anti-diabetic agent for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2). While generally well-tolerated, metformin can accumulate in patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) or chronic kidney disease (CKD), leading to potentially life-threatening complications such as metformin-associated lactic acidosis (MALA). Severe hyperkalemia is a rare but serious manifestation of metformin toxicity.
