Article Synopsis
  • Parkinson's disease (PD) significantly impacts the health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) of patients and their caregivers, especially as the disease progresses.
  • The study investigated how neuropsychiatric symptoms—specifically mood and apathy—affected HR-QoL in patients and increased caregiver burden.
  • Results showed a strong link between these neuropsychiatric symptoms and lower HR-QoL, suggesting that addressing these issues could help improve the well-being of both patients and caregivers.

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is an atypical Parkinson syndrome with axial akinetic-rigid symptoms, early postural instability, and ocular motor impairments. Patients experience a rapid loss of autonomy and care dependency; thus, caregivers must assist in the activities of daily living early in the course of the disease. Caregiver burden is an extremely important factor in disease management.

An NAD-linked lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in a crude mitochondrial fraction obtained from Tetrahymena homogenates was previously reported by this laboratory. This fraction contains the NADH and succinate oxidase system as well as the mitochondrial cytochromes and carries out oxidative phosphorylation. The preparation catalyzes the oxidation of D- and L-lactate linked only to certain analogs of NAD; it has not been possible to demonstrate NAD-dependent D- or L-lactate oxidation nor is there any evidence that either of these enzymes is a flavoprotein as indicated by their inability to reduce directly certain artificial electron acceptors.

In 68 patients suffering from acute unilateral vestibular disorders 168 electronystagmograms could be analysed paying special attention to the nystagmographic reactions in the second postrotatory period. When the postrotatorius II was directed to the affected side (in 25% of our cases) this was an indication for an advanced extent of central compensation in the electronystagmogram. There was a good correlation between the postrotatorius II and the other nystagmographic reactions in the per- and postrotatory periods.
