The cryopreservation of rat embryos is useful for efficiently archiving rat resources in bioresource repositories. The cryopreserved fertilized oocytes can be quickly reanimated to rats with homozygous mutations using embryo transfer. In addition, cryopreserved rat fertilized oocytes are easier to transport than live animals.

Background: Patients undergoing liver transplantation are in a state of coagulopathy before surgery because of liver failure. Intraoperative hemorrhage, massive transfusions, and post-reperfusion syndrome further contribute to coagulopathy, acidosis, and hypothermia. In such situations, temporary cessation of surgery with open abdominal management and resuscitation in the intensive care unit (ICU), which is commonly used as a damage control strategy in trauma care, may be effective.

Reactive sulfur species (RSS) are present in root nodules; however, their role in symbiosis and the mechanisms underlying their production remain unclear. We herein investigated whether RSS produced by the cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE) of microsymbionts are involved in root nodule symbiosis. A cse mutant of Mesorhizobium loti exhibited the decreased production of hydrogen sulfide and other RSS.

A dimeric molecule, di-5(3FM-C4T), with fluoro-substituted mesogenic cores composed of three-aromatic rings and linked by a pentamethylene spacer is prepared. Di-5(3FM-C4T) forms the ferroelectric nematic (N), ferroelectric smectic-A (SmAP), and polar isotropic (Iso) phases. The N phase is composed of molecules in U-shaped conformation that behave like polar rod-like molecules.

Three kinds of bent-shaped dimeric molecules are synthesized by fluorine substitution of C16 molecules, and influences of the substitution on the polar smectic phases are examined. The fluorine-substituted C16 molecules form the SmAP and SmCP phases. The transition temperatures decrease by 20-30 °C without significantly changing the temperature span of the smectic phase, and the switching rates to the ferroelectric state become 5-10 μs, which are fairly shorter than 250 μs of C16.
