In this study, anion-responsive π-conjugated macrocycles were synthesized to demonstrate anion-binding and ion-pairing properties along with the ordered structures.  Ion-pairing charge-by-charge assembly of a [1+2]-type complex of a macrocycle as a pseudo π-electronic anion and a countercation was revealed by single-crystal X-ray analysis.  Further, two-dimensional (2D) arrays of the macrocycles bearing alkoxy chains, exhibiting anion-driven disordered structures, were constructed on a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) substrate as observed by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM).

Background: The rise in internet addiction, including web-based gaming and social networking services, is a serious concern. Even with access to medical institutions and counseling services, individuals with internet addiction, particularly adolescents, often refuse medical treatment or counseling. Parent-focused psychological intervention may lead to positive outcomes by improving the parent-adolescent relationship and helping parents identify and modify their adolescent's problematic behaviors, including internet addiction.

Purpose: Infantile epileptic spasms syndrome (IESS) with epileptic spasms as the main seizure type, is treated with adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). This study, for the first time, examines the effects of epileptic spasms and ACTH on blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability in patients with IESS of unknown etiology.

Methods: We prospectively evaluated the changes in BBB permeability in patients with IESS of unknown etiology at the Saitama Children's Medical Center between February 2012 and February 2024.
