Article Synopsis
  • The use of tracking devices, particularly miniature light-level geolocators, has become common in studying the movement patterns of small bird species, revealing previously unknown migratory behaviors.
  • A review of data from 549 studies found a weak negative impact of geolocator tagging on apparent survival rates, especially in smaller species and those with heavier device loads.
  • The findings suggest that while geolocators can be beneficial for studying small birds, researchers must carefully consider the potential ethical implications and balance them with scientific value in future studies.

Article Synopsis
  • Hatching failure is a major factor affecting the declining populations of Northern wheatear birds in The Netherlands, with rates as high as 27% annually.
  • High levels of dioxin-like compounds (DLCs) were found in the eggs, contributing to embryonic issues, but the birds may not be highly sensitive to these toxins.
  • Other potential causes for low fecundity, such as nutrition imbalances and inbreeding, are also considered important factors in population decline.

Background: The tryptophan depletion theory assumes that low tryptophan levels are present in delirium. These lower levels may be regarded as a biochemical marker for cellular immune activation, which may lead to increased catabolism of tryptophan into kynurenine via stimulation of the enzyme indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) by interferon-γ.

Objective: To compare plasma tryptophan and kynurenine levels, and IDO activity in hospitalized patients with and without delirium.

Objectives: To determine the relationship between perioperative delirium and cortisol, glucose, and insulin in older adults acutely admitted for hip fracture.

Design: Prospective cohort study.

Setting: Tertiary university center.

Background: With an ageing population, older persons become a larger part of the hospital population. The incidence of delirium is high in this group, and experiencing delirium has major short- and long-term sequelae, which makes prevention crucial. During delirium, a disruption of the sleep-wake cycle is frequently observed.
