Article Synopsis
  • Minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) is a common issue in liver cirrhosis and is assessed using the portosystemic hepatic encephalopathy score (PHES), with existing German normal values applied to Danish patients.
  • A study involving 200 Danish and 217 German healthy participants assessed performance on various psychometric tests to evaluate the appropriateness of these German norms for the Danish population.
  • Results showed that the performance of Danish participants differed from Germans, necessitating the establishment of new Danish normal values, which led to a lower percentage of MHE diagnoses when used compared to the German values.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to standardize the Psychometric Hepatic Encephalopathy Score (PHES) for Turkish patients and compare it with German norms, focusing on the prevalence of minimal hepatic encephalopathy (mHE) using both PHES and Critical Flicker Frequency (CFF) methods.
  • A total of 940 individuals participated—816 healthy volunteers and 124 cirrhotic patients—with findings showing a mHE prevalence of 29.8% using PHES and 27.4% with CFF; however, the compatibility between the two tests was low.
  • The results concluded that using both PHES and CFF is vital for research, and the combination of specific subtests (Digit Symbol

Purpose: During bracket bonding, patients often report about thermosensitivity. The reason could be that modern light emitting diode (LED) light curing units run with intensities up to 3200 mW/cm. In this in vitro pilot study with nonpulpal circulation approaches, the temperatures in the pulpal cavity were measured.

Background: Whether Borna disease virus (BDV-1) is a human pathogen remained controversial until recent encephalitis cases showed BDV-1 infection could even be deadly. This called to mind previous evidence for an infectious contribution of BDV-1 to mental disorders. Pilot open trials suggested that BDV-1 infected depressed patients benefitted from antiviral therapy with a licensed drug (amantadine) which also tested sensitive in vitro.
