Background: Ischemic stroke is characterized by a necrotic lesion in the brain surrounded by an area of dying cells termed the penumbra. Salvaging the penumbra either with thrombolysis or mechanical retrieval is the cornerstone of stroke management. Thromboembolic diseases including arterial and venous thrombosis are common causes of morbidity and mortality globally. The prothrombotic state of obesity can increase the risk of thromboembolism. We aimed to investigate if there was an association between baseline hypercoagulable rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) profile and thromboembolic complications in arthroplasty patients with obesity. Patients with a body mass index ≥ 25 kg/m and/or waist circumference ≥94 cm (M) and 80 cm (F) undergoing hip and knee arthroplasty had pre- and postoperative ROTEM.
