Surgical and oncologic outcomes for liver resections of cystic neuroendocrine tumor liver metastasis.

Background: Cystic neuroendocrine tumor liver metastases (NETLM) are rare and dynamics in the liquid compartment often misinterpreted as rapid progression, affecting selection for liver resection candidates. This study retrospectively evaluates surgical and oncologic outcomes in patients with cystic versus solid NETLM from small bowel and pancreatic primaries.

Methods: Between 2000 and 2020, 12 patients with cystic NETLM were identified among 464 patients who underwent >90 % tumor cytoreduction debulking hepatectomy at the Mayo Clinic.

Hyperbaric oxygen treatment in addition to conventional multidisciplinary care in patients with calciphylaxis.

Background: Calciphylaxis is a rare and serious complication in patients with kidney disease. It has few treatment options and poor prognosis. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) may improve wound healing and was added to our conventional care in 2012.

Validity of a Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Diagnosis in Adult Patients in the Danish National Patient Register.

Purpose: To assess the positive predictive value (PPV) of the diagnostic codes for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) in the Danish National Patient Register (DNPR) and identify factors affecting the PPV.

Patients And Methods: We randomly sampled 200 patients registered in DNPR with the diagnostic codes DI421 (obstructive) or DI422 (non-obstructive) HCM, from Eastern Denmark, between December 1, 2017, and September 16, 2021. We assessed patients' medical records and classified whether the diagnosis of HCM was correct, incorrect, or uncertain according to the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) guidelines.

Current Status of Laparoscopic Liver Resection.

The evolution of laparoscopic liver surgery, originating in the 1990s, has been marked by significant advancements and milestones, overcoming initial technical hurdles and gaining widespread acceptance within the surgical community as a precise and safe alternative to open procedures. Along this journey, numerous challenges emerged, leading to the accumulation of evidence and the development of guidelines aimed at assisting surgeons in determining the safety, suitability, and complexity of laparoscopic liver resection. This chapter provides a thorough examination of key aspects of laparoscopic liver resection, including difficulty scoring systems, criteria for patient selection, technical considerations, outcomes across different types of liver lesions, and the innovative solutions developed to address challenges, thus offering a comprehensive overview of laparoscopic liver resection, and highlighting its evolving significance in modern hepatobiliary surgery.
