We evaluated the necessity for antibiotic prophylaxis in uncomplicated transurethral resection of the prostate. A total of 107 patients was entered into a double-blind, prospective, placebo-controlled, randomized trial. Only 7 patients were excluded because they had positive preoperative urine cultures.

We treated 43 patients with adenocarcinoma of the prostate confined to the pelvis with a combination of staging pelvic lymphadenectomy, temporary implantation of the prostate with 192iridium and external beam irradiation. The procedure was relatively safe with low early morbidity. However, there were significant late complications.

The characteristics of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) complicating spinal cord injury (SCI) were studied retrospectively in 43 male hemodialysis patients. A control group of male patients dialyzed in the same institution were studied for comparison. The SCI patients had significantly lower serum creatinine concentrations and daily urinary creatinine excretion than the control group, despite comparable creatinine clearances.

Secondary tumors of the penis are rare. The genitourinary and gastrointestinal tracts are the most common sites of origin. Immunoperoxidase tissue stains are useful in determining the primary site of secondary tumors of the penis.
