The acoustic repertoires of long-finned pilot whales () in the Mediterranean Sea are poorly understood. This study aims to create a catalogue of calls, analyse acoustic parameters, and propose a classification tree for future research. An acoustic database was compiled using recordings from the Alboran Sea, Gulf of Lion and Ligurian Sea (Western Mediterranean Basin) between 2008 and 2022, totalling 640 calls.

The click they emit during socialization and echolocation contains information about the length of their acoustic organs and, therefore the length of the body through the interpulse interval (IPI). This paper provides the first IPI/age relationship for juvenile male and female sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) based on field recordings of individuals whose age is largely known.

This set is referred to as a vocal repertoire, which is specific to a species or a sub-group of a species. When conducted by human experts, the formal description of vocal repertoires can be laborious and/or biased.

Human development is growing fast in these parts and may constitute a serious threat to such poorly known species. It is thus urgent to develop new tools to try and study these cryptic species and find out more about their behavior, population levels, and habits.
