Sexual dimorphism of MASLD-driven bone loss.

Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) is highly prevalent with major risk of progression to Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis (MASH) and Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC). Recently, osteoporosis and bone fracture have emerged as sexually-dimorphic comorbidities of MASLD yet the mechanisms of this bone loss are unknown. Herein, we address these knowledge gaps using DIAMOND mice which develop MASLD, MASH, and HCC via Western diet exposure.

Obesity is a metabolic disease resulting from excess body fat accumulation associated with chronic systemic inflammation. Obesity has been shown to impact the function and activity of neutrophils, macrophages, and T cells, contributing to higher circulating levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Biomaterial surface properties such as roughness and hydrophilicity can influence the behavior of immune cells in the peri-implant microenvironment.

Connecting the dots: sex, depression, and musculoskeletal health.

Depression and multiple musculoskeletal disorders are overrepresented in women compared with men. Given that depression is a modifiable risk factor and improvement of depressive symptoms increases positive outcomes following orthopedic intervention, efforts to improve clinical recognition of depressive symptoms and increased action toward ameliorating depressive symptoms among orthopedic patients are positioned to reduce complications and positively affect patient-reported outcomes. Although psychosocial factors play a role in the manifestation and remittance of depression, it is also well appreciated that primary biochemical changes are capable of causing and perpetuating depression.

Postoperative pain scores and opioid use after standard bupivacaine vs. liposomal bupivacaine regional blocks for abdominal cancer surgery: A propensity score matched study.

Background: Fascial plane blocks (FPBs) are widely used for abdominal surgery with the assumption that liposomal bupivacaine (LB) is more effective than standard bupivacaine (SB).

Methods: This was a single-institution retrospective cohort study of patients administered FPBs with LB or SB ​+ ​admixtures (dexamethasone/dexmedetomidine) for open abdominal cancer surgery. Propensity score matching generated a 2:1 (LB:SB) matched cohort.

Seasonal variability in energetic value of Crangon alaskensis and effects of marine heatwaves in the Northeast Pacific Ocean.

Research cruises were conducted to sample the invertebrate community along the shelf off the central coast of Oregon from 2010 to 2018. A large marine heatwave (MHW) hit the northeast Pacific in fall 2014 and persisted locally through 2015. Here, we assessed the caloric content changes of Crangon alaskensis (a common sandy shrimp) before, during, and after the 2014-2015 MHW.
