OXA-181 Beta Lactamase is not a Major Mediator of Carbapenem Resistance in Enterobacteriaceae.

Background: Detection of carbapenem hydrolyzing class D beta lactamase OXA-181, (a variant of OXA-48) in Enterobacteriaceae, is important, to institute appropriate therapy and to initiate preventive measures. This study was done to determine the presence of OXA 48 and its derivative OXA-181 in Enterobacteriaceae of pathogenic significance.

Material And Methods: One hundred and eleven non-repetitive Enterobacteriaceae isolates which were resistant to any of the cephalosporin subclasses III and which exhibited reduced susceptibility to carbapenems were included in the study.

Isolated ulcerative skin lesion caused by Salmonella Weltevreden.

Salmonella enterica serovar Weltevreden is not a commonly isolated serotype in India. We report isolation of Salmonella Weltevreden, from an unusual site--an ulcer on the gluteal region of a patient who had undergone coronary artery bypass surgery. To our knowledge, Salmonellae have never been reported to cause isolated ulcerative lesions on the skin.

Antibiotic-induced release of inflammatory mediators from bacteria in experimental Klebsiella pneumoniae-induced sepsis.

In a fibrin-clot model of sepsis, developed in mice, treatment with the antibiotics ceftazidime (Cfz) and ofloxacin (Ofl) caused significant (p < 0.01) release of endotoxin and TNF-alpha after 4.5 h when compared with control (untreated) and amikacin (Ami) treated group.

In-vitro study of mouse peritoneal macrophage response to virulent and avirulent strains of mycobacteria.

An immunological study of pathogenesis of tuberculosis was carried out in BALB-c mice in-vitro. Peritoneal macrophages obtained from BALB-c mice were challenged with virulent (H37Rv) and avirulent (H37Ra, BCG, M. phlei) strains of mycobacteria.
