Study of Natural Cytotoxicity Receptors in Patients with HIV/AIDS and Cancer: A Cross-Sectional Study.

The NCR receptors play a fundamental role in the cytotoxicity mediated by NK cells against tumor cells. In the current study, we investigated possible HIV/AIDS-related changes in the expression of the NCR receptors comparing healthy donors, HIV/AIDS patients, and HIV/AIDS patients with cancer (HIV/AIDSWC). The NCRs were quantified in NK cells (NK(dim) and NK(bright)) and T lymphocytes from peripheral blood samples by flow cytometry.

How resistant is 'treatment-resistant' obsessive-compulsive disorder in youth?

Objectives: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is often perceived as being difficult to treat. This study aimed to test the hypothesis that treatment non-response in routine clinical practice is often due to failures in the delivery of treatment, and that most patients who are apparently treatment-resistant will respond to treatment if adequately delivered.

Design: Retrospective cohort data analysis.

Immune status of Fanconi anemia patients: decrease in T CD8 and CD56dim CD16+ NK lymphocytes.

Fanconi anemia (FA), a rare genetic disease in which patients' life is compromised mainly by hematological abnormalities and cancer prone, seems to be affected by subtle immune cell irregularities. Knowing that FA presents developmental abnormalities and, based on recent reports, suggesting that natural killer (NK) CD56(dim) and NK CD56(bright) correspond to sequential differentiation pathways, we investigated if there were changes on the total number of NK cells and subsets as well as on T CD4 and T CD8 lymphocytes and their ratio. A large sample of FA patients (n = 42) was used in this work, and the results were correlated to clinical hematological status of these patients.

Helpful aspects of bereavement support for adults following an expected death: volunteers' and bereaved people's perspectives.

Helpful and unhelpful aspects of bereavement support were investigated from the perspectives of 24 bereaved adults and their volunteer bereavement support workers. Most commonly reported themes were the provision of hope and reassurance, and the opportunity for continued sharing and support. Significantly more clients than volunteers reported provision of information, and talking to someone outside their social network as helpful, and both groups scored higher on helpfulness ratings than comparative groups of psychotherapists and clients.
