The actomyosin-based contractile ring is required for several biological processes, such as wound healing and cytokinesis of animal cells. Despite progress in defining the roles of this structure in both wound closure and cell division, we still do not fully understand how an actomyosin ring is spatially and temporally assembled, nor do we understand the molecular mechanism of its contraction. Recent results have demonstrated that microtubule-dependent local assembly of F-actin and myosin-II is present in wound closure and is similar to that in cytokinesis in animal cells.

Transitin is an avian intermediate filament protein whose transient expression in the progenitor cells of the muscle and nerve tissues is similar to that of mammalian nestin. Both proteins contain an alpha-helical core domain flanked by a short N-terminal head and a long C-terminal extremity. However, the tail region of transitin is significantly different from that of nestin in that it harbors a unique motif containing more than 50 leucine zipper-like heptad repeats which is not found in any other intermediate filament protein.
