Article Synopsis
  • - This systematic review aimed to understand how common chronic pain is among adults with severe lower limb injuries (SLLIs) in both civilian and military settings, finding that about 63% of patients experience chronic pain post-injury.
  • - Out of 43 studies involving over 5,600 patients, chronic pain prevalence was similar among amputees (64%) and those who had limb salvage procedures (56%), with higher rates found in civilian populations (70%) compared to military ones (51%).
  • - The study highlights that most individuals with SLLIs will likely experience chronic pain, stressing the need for healthcare systems to focus on research and resources aimed at reducing this long-term suffering.

Polypharmacotherapy is an ever-increasing issue with an ageing patient population. Anticholinergic medications make up a large proportion of patient medication but cause significant side effects, contributing to well-documented issues within the older population and in hospital medicine. This review explores the documented impact of anticholinergic burden in older surgical patients on postoperative delirium, infection, length of stay and readmission, urinary retention, ileus and mortality.
