Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the risks of stopping versus continuing anticoagulant and/or antiplatelet medications (ACAP) before cervical and thoracic epidural steroid injections, focusing on the incidence of epidural hematomas (EHs).
  • Data from 591 patients scheduled for interlaminar cervical and/or thoracic epidural steroid injections between 2009 and 2017 was analyzed, revealing that 351 patients stopped their ACAP medications, while 240 continued them without any clinically relevant cases of EHs.
  • The findings suggest that there is a minimal risk of EHs regardless of whether patients ceased or maintained their ACAP, prompting a re-evaluation of current practices regarding these medications before the

Increasing palliative care presence in the intensive care unit (ICU) improves symptom management, increases goals-of-care discussion, and reduces unnecessary procedures in ICU patients. An interdisciplinary study team developed a palliative care trigger program in a 17-bed surgical ICU (SICU). Surgical ICU patients who met 3 triggers (ICU length of stay > 10 days, repeat ICU admission, and metastatic cancer) automatically received a palliative care consult.

Autologous bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMNCs) infused after severe traumatic brain injury have shown promise for treating the injury. We evaluated their impact in children, particularly their hypothesized ability to preserve the blood-brain barrier and diminish neuroinflammation, leading to structural CNS preservation with improved outcomes. We performed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-sham-controlled Bayesian dose-escalation clinical trial at two children's hospitals in Houston, TX and Phoenix, AZ, USA (NCT01851083).

Introduction: The use of weight-inclusive programming within a workplace wellness context remains understudied.

Methods: The present study is a pilot/feasibility study of a 3-month, virtual, weight-inclusive, intuitive eating-based workplace wellness program. Program participants (n = 114), who were all employees at a large public university in the Midwest, received weekly emails with a link to an instructional video related to intuitive eating and were encouraged to meet virtually with their health coach.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) results in activated microglia. Activated microglia can be measured in vivo by using positron emission topography (PET) ligand peripheral benzodiazepine receptor standardized uptake values (PBR28suv). Cell based therapies have utilized autologous bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMNCs) to attenuate activated microglia after TBI.
