Emphysema is produced by severe food restriction in rats and is postulated to result from depletion of lung connective tissue. We studied (1) whether total dietary protein depletion worsens nutritional emphysema, and (2) whether the reduced content of lung connective tissue in nutritional emphysema results from lack of accumulation caused by impaired lung growth or by a net loss from the lung.
