The characteristics of the palatal rugae zone (number of rugae, relief type, posterior limitation) were investigated on the maxillary casts of 44 patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate and 28 patients with bilateral clefts by means of reflex microscopy, a three-dimensional, computer-assisted, touch-free measuring system for the metrical registration and analysis of the parameters directly on the maxillary casts for the segments of the 2 cleft groups. The features "number of palatal rugae" and "relief type" (primary rugae) were determined both before and after surgical repair of the cleft palate. Both segments in unilateral cleft lip and palate and both lateral segments in bilateral clefts most commonly had 4 to 5 palatal rugae.

The study investigated the relationship of the palatal rugae to points and distances of the cleft palate during the time period from birth to early mixed dentition in subjects with unilateral and bilateral cleft lip and palate by means of a three-dimensional measuring system. The changes identified in the distances from the lateral palatal rugae points of the first and third rugae to the incisal point, the canine point and the tuberosity line made it possible to assess how growth and the various forms of therapy applied affected the position of the palatal rugae during the study period (from birth to early mixed dentition). Changes in the linear distances from the palatal rugae to the maxillary measuring points were identified during preoperative therapy, after lip surgery, and after palate surgery.

This study traces the changes in maxillary dimension in 44 unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) patients and 28 bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP) patients from birth up to the time of palate surgery at age 3. Measurements on dental casts were carried out at 4 defined registration stages. The results revealed a continuous reduction in cleft dimension parallel to an increase in the transversal and sagittal maxillary dimensions.

The most appropriate route for regional administration of chemotherapeutic drugs to liver tumours was studied in a standardized rodent model: cells of Novikoff hepatoma were transplanted into the central liver lobe of Sprague-Dawley rats. From day 5 to day 12 after transplantation, the liver was continuously perfused with 420 mg/kg 5'-fluoro-2-deoxyuridine by subcutaneous osmotic micropumps via the hepatic artery (n = 20), the portal vein (n = 20) or both vessels together (n = 12). The tumour multiplication factor (TMF) and the vascularization of the tumour were evaluated.

This review focuses on the cellular origin of Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg (HRS) cells, their association with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and their relation to Ki-1+ anaplastic large-cell (ALC) lymphoma. The tingibility of HRS cells in paraffin sections for polyclonal immunoglobulin represents a staining artifact and thus can no longer serve as an argument for the histiocytic nature of HRS cells. Immunolabeling studies do not support the putative relationship of HRS cells to cell types such as macrophages or interdigitating reticulum cells, but instead suggest: a) that lymphocyte-predominant (LP) Hodgkin's disease (HD) represents a B-cell neoplasm which is distinct from non-LP HD, and b) that non-LP HD constitutes a syndrome rather than a disease entity, with the existence of T-cell types and B-cell types.
