Aim: This cross-sectional study aimed to determine whether medical students with little to no ultrasound experience could correctly distinguish between 'pulsation present' and 'no pulsation present' after a short introductory video on the subject using ultrasound videos of the common carotid artery (CCA).

Methods: Ultrasound videos (B-mode, M-mode, and Color Doppler) of pulsatile (systolic blood pressure 70-80 mmHg) and non-pulsatile (cardiopulmonary bypass surgery, clamped aorta) CCA were created. These were demonstrated to the medical students for a period of ten seconds - corresponding to the duration of the manual pulse palpation during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate whether and to what extent perioperative hypnosis and relaxation techniques are used in German anaesthesia departments, what they are, where any difficulties in their application lie and how great the interest in this type of therapy is. Another research question was to find out whether there are specialist areas in which these methods are used more frequently than in other specialist areas.

Methods: A descriptive survey was conducted by means of a questionnaire in all hospitals with anaesthesia departments in Germany.

Background: Local infiltration analgesia is commonly used for postoperative pain control after several surgical procedures including intra- and peri-articular as well as wound infiltration. Even though, various adjuvants injected with the local anesthetic have been studied in pairwise comparison or compared to peripheral nerve blocks, the question which adjuvant or combination of adjuvants is the most effective in prolonging the duration of different types of local infiltration analgesia (LIA) has not been answered conclusively.

Objective: The objective of this network meta-analysis was to determine the analgesic effectiveness and safety of adjuvants in local infiltration analgesia.

Background And Objective: Chronic pain is associated with a poor health-related quality of life (HRQL). Whereas the prescription rate of opioids increased during the last decades, their use in chronic non-malignant pain remains unclear. However, there is currently no clinical consensus or evidence-based guidelines that consider the long-term effects of opioid therapy on HRQL in patients with chronic non-cancer pain.

Background: Needle visualization is essential to avoid vascular puncture and nerve injury in ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia. Several factors that statistically influence needle visibility have been described but the dimensions of their individual impact remain unclear. This study aimed to quantify the impact of various independent factors on ultrasound needle visibility.
