Bound metals are observed in a great many natural proteins, where they perform diverse roles in determining protein folding, stability and function. Due to the broad impact of bound metals on biophysical and biochemical properties of proteins, it is valuable to have accurate and facile methods for determining the metal content of proteins. Here we describe an optimized methodology using 4-(2-pyridylazo)resorcinol (PAR) to simultaneously quantify two metal ions in solution.

Designing deaf babies and the question of disability.

This article explores the recent controversy surrounding a Deaf lesbian couple's deliberate attempt at finding a Deaf donor to increase their chances of having a d/Deaf baby. Many have criticized the Deaf couple for harming their child; Deaf advocates have responded that the couple's decision reflects a natural cultural desire. This article seeks to explore how the medical model of disability implicitly used on both sides of the debate has obscured important points.

Audism: exploring the metaphysics of oppression.

This article traces the development of the concept of "audism" from its inception in the mid-1970s by exploring three distinct dimensions of oppression: individual, institutional, and metaphysical. Although the first two aspects of audism have been identified, there is a deeply rooted belief system regarding language and human identity that is yet to be explored within the context of audism. This article attempts to expose how our particular historical and philosophical constructions of language and being have created what French philosopher Jacques Derrida calls phonocentrism.

Initial experience of McMaster SmokeStop. Smoking Cessation Clinic at McMaster Family Practice Unit.

Problem Addressed: There are very few smoking cessation resources in the community, and many family physicians have not incorporated smoking cessation counseling into their practices. Yet many smokers are interested in individual assistance to stop smoking. McMaster SmokeStop is a unique smoking cessation program that operates within the Family Practice Unit at McMaster University Medical Centre.

Relationship between functional exercise capacity and general quality of life in nonsurgical patients with lower-extremity peripheral arterial disease.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between functional exercise capacity and general quality of life in patients with lower-extremity peripheral arterial disease (PAD) whose conditions are managed without surgical intervention and to establish new ways of measuring functional exercise capacity and general quality of life in this population. This descriptive survey examined 29 nonsurgical patients with lower-extremity PAD. Functional exercise capacity was measured with the 6-minute walk test.
