Leukemic meningitis complicating early stage chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Central nervous system involvement in chronic lymphocytic leukemia is rare. We describe a patient with early stage chronic lymphocytic leukemia who developed visual loss and transient paresthesias. Lumbar puncture with cytology and flow cytometry documented leukemic meningitis, which responded to standard treatment; including cranial irradiation and intrathecal chemotherapy.

Functional hyposplenism due to a primary epithelioid hemangioendothelioma of the spleen.

We present a unique case of functional hyposplenism due to massive involvement of the spleen by a rare tumor, an epithelioid hemangioendothelioma, in a 9-year-old girl. To our knowledge, three previous cases of this disorder involving the spleen have been reported, but this is the first associated with functional hyposplenism.

Assessment of the proliferative index of human bone marrow using immunohistology in tissue sections offers practical advantages over other techniques. It is simpler to perform and can be applied to archival material. Progress in this area has been hampered by technical problems.
