In vivo selections are powerful tools for the directed evolution of enzymes. However, the need to link enzymatic activity to cellular survival makes selections for enzymes that do not fulfill a metabolic function challenging. Here, we present an in vivo selection strategy that leverages recoded organisms addicted to non-canonical amino acids (ncAAs) to evolve biocatalysts that can provide these building blocks from synthetic precursors.

Objective: The objective of this study was to search for an inexpensive and easy method to implement daily for assessing medication adherence during pregnancy.
Purpose: To compare the outcome of corneal grafts preserved in McCarey-Kaufman (MK) medium versus organ culture after penetrating keratoplasties.
Methods: Paired corneas were stored in McCarey medium for 2-44 hours (mean 21 hours) and in organ culture (OC) for 144 -240 hours (mean 192 hours). Penetrating keratoplasties were performed by 2 surgeons in 2 groups of patients with keratoconus, matched for age.
Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) for the management of conjunctival malignant melanoma and primary acquired melanosis (PAM) with atypia.
Methods: Four consecutive patients with histologically proved invasive, primary conjunctival malignant melanoma were treated with wide surgical excision and AMT. Amniotic membrane grafts were harvested and processed under sterile conditions according to a standard protocol.
To establish the tolerance of liver tissue to single high-dose intraoperative irradiation, the histopathological changes in the canine liver after single high-dose intraoperative irradiation were investigated by means of radionuclide imaging and light microscopy. Intraoperative irradiation at doses of 0, 10, 20, 25 or 30 Gy was applied to a part of the liver of 25 beagles. Radionuclide imaging using (99m)Tc-sulfur colloid was performed at several times during follow-up.
