We report a case of complete volvulus of the small bowel in a ten-year-old child. This major complication of incomplete malrotation of the primary digestive loop usually occurs within the first few months of life. Our unusual clinical observation is the opportunity to point out that vomiting and abdominal pain may be overlooked, with the volvulus then appearing to be the first manifestation.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe occurrence in a previously healthy infant of sudden febrile encephalopathy with shock and metabolic acidosis associated with liver and renal failure and bloody watery diarrhea has been reported by several authors in recent years. We report the same association in a 3 1/2 month-old infant. We discuss the similarities between this clinical picture and malignant hyperthermia and Reye syndrome.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFOvarian function was investigated in 17 patients aged 13 5/12 to 30 years who had received various types of combined chemotherapy without any irradiation. Ovarian insufficiency was found in 6 cases with amenorrhea (n = 5) or irregular menstruations (n = 1). There is a high risk of sterility in these cases although as described in one case, a normal pregnancy occurred in spite of evidence of ovarian failure.

The first hyperglycemic episode occurred in all cases before the fortieth day of treatment but other episodes were observed thereafter. All children were glycosuric, without ketonuria.
