Is the bioactivity of induced membranes time dependent?

Purpose: The induced membrane technique (IMT) is a two-stage surgical procedure for reconstruction of bone defects. Bone grafting (second stage of IMT) is recommend after 4-8 weeks assuming the highest bioactivity of IMs. However, larger studies concerning the biology and maturation of IMs and a potential time dependency of the bioactivity are missing.

Background: Several treatment options for chronic periprosthetic joint infections have been published in the current literature, with an on-going discussion to determine effective management algorithms.

Aims: Fungal periprosthetic joint infections (fPJIs) are rare complications, constituting only 1% of all PJIs. In these cases, simultaneous septic arthrodesis with the use of the Ilizarov external fixator represents a possible alternative to amputation. This case series presents the results and complications of patients with acute or chronic infection of the tibiotalar and subtalar joints.
