Background: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) mainly affects the respiratory tract, but different organs may be involved including the kidney. Data on acute kidney injury (AKI) in critical forms of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are scarce. We aimed to assess the incidence, risk factors and prognostic impact of AKI complicating critical forms of COVID-19.

Background/aim: Inflammatory indices are useful informative markers in assessing the severity of the COVID-19 disease course; however, their involvements during series waves of SARS-CoV-2 virus outbreaks in critical patients with COVID-19 remain unclear. Hence, we aimed to ascertain the changing dynamics of the combined inflammatory indices (NLR, dNLR, CLR, LMR, PLR, SII, and SIRI) and their associations with clinical outcomes in severe COVID-19 patients during serial waves of SARS-CoV-2.

Case Report: Tropical sprue, diagnostic challenges of an old but unrecognized disease.

Tropical sprue (TS) is a post-infective disease of the small bowel characterized by a malabsorption syndrome affecting tropics inhabitants and visitors. Diagnosis of TS remains challenging since it can be confused with common diarrheal diseases, especially in non-endemic areas. We report a Tunisian case of latent TS.

In patients with central venous catheters (CVCs), catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBI) are a prominent cause of morbidity, excess hospital costs, and in some cases mortality. The aim of this prospective study was to assess the validity of the Gram stain-acridine orange leukocyte cytospin (AOLC) test for the diagnosis of CRBI in hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients with nontunnelled CVCs, using the differential-time-to-positivity (DTP)/clinical criteria as the criterion standard to define CRBIs. CVCs were externalized, nontunnelled, polyurethane double lumen catheters (Arrows, Readings, USA).
