Recasting Assessment in Continuing Professional Development as a Person-Focused Activity.

In this article, we examine assessment as conceptualized and enacted in continuing professional development (CPD). Assessment is pervasive throughout the life of an individual health professional, serving many different purposes compounded by varied and unique contexts, each with their own drivers and consequences, usually casting the person as the object of assessment. Assessment is often assumed as an included part in CPD development conceptualization.

Chromosome 1 is the largest of all human chromosomes, containing 3141 genes. It is linked to 890 known genetic diseases including congenital hypothyroidism, hemochromatosis, and prostate cancer. Recognized deletion and duplication syndromes have been described.

Use of gastrostomy tubes in children and adolescents with eating disorders and related illnesses.

Purpose: The aim of this case series was to describe five youths with psychiatric illnesses who underwent feeding tube placement as part of their treatment.

Methods: The database of a Canadian academic tertiary care eating disorder program was used to identify patients with feeding tubes.

Results: Five patients with feeding tubes were identified in the database of more than 600 patients.

Evaluating the effectiveness of gel pillows for reducing bilateral head flattening in preterm infants: a randomized controlled pilot study.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of gel pillows for reducing bilateral head molding (plagiocephaly) in preterm infants, as determined by the cephalic index (CI). Eighty-one infants weighing <1,500 g were randomly assigned at birth to usual care on a standard mattress (n = 40) or to placement on a gel pillow (n = 41). The CI was measured with a digimatic caliper upon entry and weekly thereafter, until infants had been transferred or discharged.

Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) is readily identifiable by cytology, so theoretically, most cases of invasive carcinoma should be preventable. Risk factors for carcinoma of the cervix are related to sexual activity, therefore screening should be similarly related. All women should have routine annual cytology as soon as they are sexually active.
