The purpose of this study was to explore the operator performance of the fabrication of digital orthodontic setups integrated into cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. Fifteen patients who underwent a combined orthodontic-orthognathic surgical treatment were included. The pre-treatment digital dental models and CBCT scans were fused, and four operators made virtual setups twice for all patients.

Eruption guidance appliances are recommended for early orthodontic treatment or prevention of malocclusions. The treatment effect of eruption guidance appliances and functional appliances is similar. In addition to dentoalveolar and skeletal effects, eruption guidance appliances would also have myofunctional effects for treating open mouth behaviour and swallowing problems.

Two methods for the assessment of the amount of crowding or spacing (measuring and assessment by eye) are compared. Both methods are well comparable and reproducible. Assessment by eye has the practical advantage that it takes considerable less time.
