Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease marked by systemic inflammation. While RA primarily affects the joints, its systemic effects may lead to an increased cerebro- and cardiovascular risk. Atherosclerosis of the carotid arteries is a significant risk factor for cerebrovascular events and serves as a surrogate marker for cardiovascular risk.

Sialic acid-binding immunoglobulin-like lectin-11 (SIGLEC-11) is a human lineage-specific microglial cell surface receptor that recognizes -2-8-linked oligo-/polysialylated glycomolecules with inhibitory effects on the microglial inflammatory pathways. Recently, the gene locus was prioritized as a top tier microglial gene with potential causality to Alzheimer's disease, although its role in inflammation and neurodegeneration remains poorly understood.

Deep neural networks have been remarkably successful as models of the primate visual system. One crucial problem is that they fail to account for the strong shape-dependence of primate vision. Whereas humans base their judgements of category membership to a large extent on shape, deep networks rely much more strongly on other features such as color and texture.

Recent advances in the field of endoscopy have found fertile ground for application in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Mucosal healing is a primary goal of IBD therapy, and current evidence shows that histologic remission (HR) is an additional desirable outcome. However, with the use of standard endoscopy, a considerable number of patients with histologically active disease go unrecognized.
