Wing geometric morphometrics is effective to separate sand fly species (Diptera, Psychodidae, Phlebotominae) related with leishmaniasis transmission in Mexico.

Nearly 32 % of sand fly species recorded in Mexico are related to Leishmania transmission. A correct morphological identification of sand flies is essential to improve epidemiological and control strategies. Wing geometric morphometrics (GM) has proven to be a complementary tool for classical taxonomy, allowing us to explore variations in structure and shape between species.

In July 2022, adult female Culicoides were collected from San Buenaventura (54 specimens) and Urique (3 specimens) in Chihuahua, Mexico. Culicoides reevesi and Culicoides debilipalpis were new records for the state, with C. reevesi also being a first for Mexico.

Mosquito diversity, abundance and phenology in Mexico City: A heavily urbanized environment.

We need to understand how zoonotic diseases make their way in urbanized areas, and one way is via gathering well-structured temporal and spatial accounts of zoonotic disease vectors. Due to its large biotic and abiotic heterogeneity, Mexico City provides favorable environmental conditions for the proliferation of mosquitoes including vector species of medical importance. Hereby we present the results of one year sampling (May 2023-April 2024) in eight contrasting locations in Mexico City.
