Theophylline has been administered to 76 premature infants with apnea in two therapeutic indications: curative and preventive treatment. Plasmatic theophylline and caffeine concentrations have been performed by gas chromatography for ten days for the determination of the therapeutic range. The maximum effective concentration has been defined from the data observed in 33 subjects presenting with symptoms considered as signs of toxicity.

The glycaemic control of infants and of their mothers was studied at delivery and on day 7 after birth in 11 control and 20 insulin-dependent diabetic women. At delivery, venous blood glucose was lower in infants of diabetic mothers compared with control infants (p less than 0.02).

Neonates with severe cerebral damage are usually given phenobarbital. The authors study the various means of administration and the influence of term and concomitant mannitol administration on the plasma levels of the drug. They recommend the intravenous administration of a load dose and show that phenobarbital blood levels are significantly less in prematures or in children who have been given mannitol.
