Depressed Skull Fracture in Infants: The Role of Vacuum-Assisted Intervention.

Elevation of depressed skull fractures in pediatric patients is indicated when the depression extends below the level of the inner table. Although open surgical reduction is an option for treatment, closed vacuum-assisted elevation has been found to have a high success rate and low complication rates when employed in children less than 6 months of age without disruption of the cortex. In this article, we describe two recent cases from our institution and summarize the reported cases in the literature including information about fracture specifics, device used, technical approach, and success rate of the procedure.

How Can We Better Inform Patients of the Importance of Contact Lens Compliance?: Current Perspectives.

Compliance with contact lens care is important for successful contact lens wear and for minimizing the risk of complications related to lens wear. There are many components of overall lens care guidelines that may potentially be disregarded, forgotten, or misunderstood. Literature has reported copious data on rates of poor compliance for separate lens care recommendations.

Impact of preanalytical factors on liquid biopsy in the canine cancer model.

While liquid biopsy has potential to transform cancer diagnostics through minimally-invasive detection and monitoring of tumors, the impact of preanalytical factors such as the timing and anatomical location of blood draw is not well understood. To address this gap, we leveraged pet dogs with spontaneous cancer as a model system, as their compressed disease timeline facilitates rapid diagnostic benchmarking. Key liquid biopsy metrics from dogs were consistent with existing reports from human patients.

Determining the pharmacokinetic (PK) drivers of toxicity and efficacy in preclinical studies and early clinical trials supports quantitative optimization of drug schedule and dose through computational modeling. Additionally, this approach permits prioritization of lead candidates with better PK properties early in development.
