Continuous monitoring of acute inflammation can become a very important next step for guiding therapeutic interventions in severely ill patients. This Perspective discusses the current medical need for patients with acute inflammatory diseases and the potential of continuous biosensing technologies. First, we discuss biomarkers that could help to monitor the state of a patient with acute systemic inflammation based on theoretical studies and empirical data.

Accordingly, identifying sources of UFP is essential to develop abatement policies. This study focuses on urban Europe, and aims at identifying sources and quantifying their contributions to particle number size distribution (PNSD) using receptor modelling (Positive Matrix Factorization, PMF), and evaluating long-term trends of these source contributions using the non-parametric Theil-Sen's method.

Here, analysis in a syngeneic melanoma grafting model shows that without furin coexpression, Activin-A failed to accelerate tumor growth, correlating with failure of one or both subunits to undergo cleavage in signal-sending cells, even though compensatory processing by host cells nonetheless sustained elevated circulating Activin-A levels. In reporter assays, furin-independent cleavage of one subunit enabled juxtacrine Activin-A signaling, whereas completion of proteolytic maturation by coexpressed furin or by recipient cells stimulated contact-independent activity, crosstalk with BMP receptors, and signal inhibition by follistatin.

This study introduces a method for long-term, continuous plasmonic biosensing of oligonucleotides with high temporal resolution. Our method is based on a regeneration-based reversibility approach that ensures rapid reversibility in less than 1 minute, allowing the sensor to fully reset after each measurement.

Nature provides a great source of inspiration for the development of sustainable materials with excellent properties, among which melanin with optical, electronic, and radiation protection properties are considered to be promising coloring materials. However, compared to chemical pigments, the single color, complex oxidation process, and poor solubility of natural melanin strongly limit their further applications. Here, we introduce a series of melanin-like polymeric pigments with amino acid-encoded physicochemical properties by a simple three-component reaction system.
