Although facial flushing after drinking alcohol (alcohol flushing response) is common in Asian populations, the epidemiological features in a large sample have been investigated in only a few studies. This study assessed the epidemiologic characteristics and associated factors for alcohol flushing in a Korean population. This study was based on data collected during the 2019 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES).

Article Synopsis
  • * While AD prevalence decreased in infants (0-1 years), it significantly increased among older age groups, particularly those aged 12-19 and 20 years or older, with moderate to severe cases rising from 30.96% to 39.78%.
  • * Despite the increasing severity of AD, treatment predominantly relied on corticosteroids with little change in prescription patterns, highlighting the need for new treatment guidelines focused on safer and more effective biologic therapies

Background: Comorbid depression substantially affects the management of glycemia and diabetes-related complications among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. In this study, we sought to determine the association between weight change over 4 years and depression risk among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Methods: This population-based retrospective cohort study from the National Health Insurance Services of Korea included 1 111 345 patients with type 2 diabetes who were divided into groups according to body weight change over 4 years.

Atopic dermatitis is a chronically relapsing inflammatory skin condition that has profound impacts on quality of life of patients and their family. The aim of this study is to investigate the psychological stress in parents of children with atopic dermatitis in Korea, using data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). This cross-sectional study included parents of participants under 19 years of age (970 with atopic dermatitis and 5,733 without atopic dermatitis after excluding those who meet the exclusion criteria) from the 2009 to 2012 KNHANES.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is considered the hepatic manifestation of metabolic syndrome. Periodontitis, as chronic inflammatory destructive disease, is associated metabolic syndromes bidirectionally. Toothbrushing is an essential and important way to manage periodontitis through mechanical removal of biofilm at periodontal tissue.

Objectives: Although several self-reported questionnaire-based studies have found an association between smoking and moderately increased albuminuria, this result remains controversial. We investigated whether moderately increased albuminuria was associated with smoking status, verified by urinary cotinine (an objective biomarker of tobacco exposure), using population-based, nationally representative data.

Methods: This study included 2059 participants aged ≥ 50 years from the 2014 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

It has been suggested that periodontitis is associated with metabolic abnormalities including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The fatty liver index (FLI) is a non-invasive surrogate marker and predictor of NAFLD. We aimed to determine whether FLI itself would be associated with periodontitis through a secondary analysis of previously reported nationally representative probability sample data of the Korean population.
