Article Synopsis
  • A high-performance gas sensor that operates at room temperature simplifies manufacturing and reduces power consumption by removing the need for a heater.
  • The ammonia gas sensor was created using titanium dioxide (TiO) nanosheets decorated with gold (Au) nanoparticles, made through flux growth and chemical exfoliation followed by a hydrothermal method.
  • The sensor showed a strong response (~2.8) at room temperature and at a concentration of 20 ppm of ammonia gas, due to the oxygen defects and spillover effects created by the Au nanoparticles on the TiO surface.

Despite the development of therapeutic modalities to treat cancer, multidrug resistance (MDR) and incomplete destruction of deeply embedded lung tumors remain long-standing problems responsible for tumor recurrence and low survival rates. Therefore, developing therapeutic approaches to treat MDR tumors is necessary. In this study, nanodrugs with enhanced intracellular drug internalization were identified by the covalent bonding of carbon nanotubes of a specific nano size and doxorubicin (DOX).

Disruptor of telomeric silencing-1 like (DOT1L) is a histone H3 methyltransferase which specifically catalyzes the methylation of histone H3 lysine-79 residue. Recent findings demonstrate that DOT1L is abnormally overexpressed and the upregulated DOT1L evokes the proliferation and metastasis in human breast cancer cells. Therefore, the DOT1L inhibitor is considered a promising strategy to treat breast cancers.

Due to a lack of hormone receptors, current treatment strategies for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) are limited with frequent disease recurrence and metastasis. Recent findings have suggested that aberrant methylation of histone H3 lysine 79 residue (H3K79me) by the histone methyltransferase disruptor of telomeric silencing 1-like (DOT1L) is a potential therapeutic target for TNBC clinical management. Therefore, we developed DOT1L inhibitors as potential antitumor agents against TNBC cells.

Background Context: Addition of interbody fusion via a transforaminal approach (TLIF) has become a popular surgical option for treatment of degenerative lumbar conditions. Although technically more complicated than posterolateral fusion surgery (PLF), it has been suggested that TLIF provides superior immediate stability and protects against early pedicle screw loosening. This theory has never been formally examined in a clinical study.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effectiveness of lumbar fusion surgeries, focusing on how well facet joint fusion (FJF) and posteromedial fusion (PMF) are achieved after single-level posterolateral fusion (PLF) surgery, with or without interbody fusion (IBF).
  • A retrospective analysis was conducted using computed tomography (CT) scans to evaluate fusion rates in 203 patients over a 12-month period, assessing both anatomical success and patient-reported outcomes, including pain levels and disability indices.
  • Findings showed that only 35.1% of patients who underwent PLF had successful fusion by the 12-month mark, revealing a significant gap in expected outcomes and highlighting the need for further

Transmembrane 4 L six family member 5 (TM4SF5) is highly expressed in hepatocellular carcinoma tissues and enhances migration in two-dimensional environments. Here, we investigated how TM4SF5 is involved in diverse pro-metastatic phenotypes in -like three-dimensional (3D) extracellular matrix gels. TM4SF5-positive cells aggressively formed invasive foci in 3D Matrigel, depending on TM4SF5-mediated signaling activity, cytoskeletal organization, and matrix metallopeptidase (MMP) 2-mediated extracellular remodeling, whereas TM4SF5-null cells did not.

To develop doped carbon nanostructures as non-precious metal cathode catalysts, nanocomposites were synthesized by using SBA-15 and 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-methoxyphenyl)porphyrin-iron(III) chloride with different ratios of amorphous MoS precursor. From various analyses, it was found that, during pyrolysis at 900 °C under an N atmosphere, the amorphous MoS precursor decomposed into Mo and S, facilitating the formation of graphene sheet-like carbon with MoC and doping of sulfur in the carbon. In the nanocomposite formed from 10 wt % MoS precursor (denoted as Mo/S/PC-10), most of the MoS was decomposed, thus forming S-doped carbon, which was grown on the MoC phase without crystalline MoS .

The critical evolutionary step during domestication of major cereals was elimination of seed shattering because the easy-to-shatter trait in wild relatives results in a severe reduction in yield. In this study, we analyzed the QTLs associated with shattering employing a high-density genetic map in doubled haploid (DH) population of rice (Oryza sativa L.).

Objectives: The membrane glycoprotein TM4SF5 (transmembrane 4 L6 family member 5), which is similar to the tetraspanins, is highly expressed in different cancers and causes epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). TM4SF5 interacts with other membrane proteins during its pro-tumorigenic roles, presumably at tetraspanin-enriched microdomains (TEMs/TERMs). Here, we explored TM4SF5-mediated resistance against the clinically important EGFR kinase inhibitors, with regards to cooperation with other membrane proteins, particularly the insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF1R).

The adhesion properties of cells are involved in tumor metastasis. Although KRS at the plasma membrane is shown important for cancer metastasis, additionally to canonical roles of cytosolic KRS in protein translation, how KRS and its downstream effectors promote the metastatic migration remains unexplored. Disseminative behaviors (an earlier metastatic process) of colon cancer cell spheroids embedded in 3D collagen gels were studied with regards to cell adhesion properties, and relevance in KRS(-/+) knocked-down animal and clinical colon cancer tissues.

Unlabelled: Tumor metastasis involves circulating and tumor-initiating capacities of metastatic cancer cells. Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is related to self-renewal capacity and circulating tumor cell (CTC) characteristics for tumor metastasis. Although tumor metastasis is a life-threatening, complicated process that occurs through circulation of tumor cells, mechanistic aspects of self-renewal and circulating capacities have been largely unknown.

We investigated the growth characteristics and analyzed the physicochemical properties of a doubled haploid population derived from a cross between "Cheongcheong" and "Nagdong" to breed a rice variety that tastes good after cooking and to detect quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with the taste of cooked rice. The results showed that these compounds also represent a normal distribution. Correlation analysis of the amylose, protein, and lipid contents indicated that each compound is related to the taste of cooked rice.

Transmembrane 4 L6 family member 5 (TM4SF5) is overexpressed during CCl4-mediated murine liver fibrosis and in human hepatocellular carcinomas. The tetraspanins form tetraspanin-enriched microdomains (TEMs) consisting of large membrane protein complexes on the cell surface. Thus, TM4SF5 may be involved in the signal coordination that controls liver malignancy.

The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of epicatechin gallate (ECG), a component of green tea polyphenols, on the signal pathway for oxidative stress-induced intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and MUC5AC overexpression in normal human nasal epithelial (NHNE) cells. Passage-2 NHNE cells were used, and ECG was administered before stimulation with exogenous hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)). MUC5AC gene and protein levels were measured by real-time PCR and dot blot analysis.

A fungus ball is usually found in just one sinus, often the maxillary sinus, followed by the sphenoid, ethmoid, and frontal sinuses. We report the case of a fungus ball in the inferior meatus of a 50-year-old woman, which was successfully removed by nasal endoscopic surgery. This is the first case to our knowledge that has been reported at this unusual site.
