Dynamic [Tc]Tc-mebrofenin SPECT/CT in preoperative planning of liver resection: a prospective study.

Background: At least 20% of the future liver remnant must function properly after liver tumor resection to avoid post-hepatectomy liver failure (PHLF). [Tc]Tc-mebrofenin scintigraphy and SPECT are unique noninvasive, quantitative methods for evaluating liver function via hepatocellular bilirubin clearance.

Aim: To evaluate the value of dynamic [Tc]Tc-mebrofenin SPECT/CT parameters for predicting clinically relevant PHLF according to the ISGLS criteria.

For early-stage non-small cell lung cancer, surgical resection remains the best treatment option. Currently, sublobar resection, including segmentectomy, is recommended in these cases, as it provides a better quality of life with the same oncological outcomes; however, is requires adequate resection margins. Accurate preoperative planning and proper identification of the intersegmental planes during thoracic surgery are crucial for ensuring precise surgical management and adequate resection margins.

Chronic postoperative pain after non-intubated uniportal VATS lobectomy.

Introduction: Patients undergoing thoracic surgery are at increased risk of developing, long-lasting pain. Beyond the non-surgical factors, the type of operation, including the number of incisions, and the anesthetic assessment seemed to be important factors, although some studies are controversial. The aim of our study was to examine the presence of chronic postoperative pain after non-intubated uniportal VATS lobectomy.

Predictive Potential of RNA Polymerase B (II) Subunit 1 (RPB1) Cytoplasmic Aggregation for Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy Failure.

We aimed to investigate the contribution of co-translational protein aggregation to the chemotherapy resistance of tumor cells. Increased co-translational protein aggregation reflects altered translation regulation that may have the potential to buffer transcription under genotoxic stress. As an indicator for such an event, we followed the cytoplasmic aggregation of RPB1, the aggregation-prone largest subunit of RNA polymerase II, in biopsy samples taken from patients with invasive carcinoma of no special type.

Validation of the modified Alvarado score on patients attending A&E units with suspected appendicitis.

Introduction: The aim of our prospective study was to confirm validity and diagnostic accuracy of the modified Alvarado score, which was developed at the Department of Surgery, University of Szeged, on patients presenting with symptoms suggestive of acute appendicitis (right lower quadrant complaints) at the A&E department.

The molecular mechanism of pancreatic ion secretion is challenging to investigate due to the limited access to functional human ductal epithelia. Patient-derived organoids may overcome these limitations, however direct accessibility of the apical membrane is not solved.

[Surgical treatment of breast cancer, national and international standards of care].

Breast cancer shall continue to be a public health problem because of its constantly ascending incidence and its high mortality. In the last decades, several positive changes happened in the treatment of this disease, as breast cancer screening, and introducing more effective oncological and surgical therapeutical methods. Qualitative and methodological development of breast surgery, the centralisation and the daily practice of quality assurance principles together will play an important role in reduction of breast cancer mortality in the future.

Impact of neoadjuvant FLOT treatment of advanced gastric and gastroesophageal junction cancer following surgical therapy.

Introduction: Therapeutic treatment for advanced-stage (T-T) gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) and gastric cancer involves neoadjuvant chemotherapy with subsequent surgical intervention.

Method: Neoadjuvant oncological treatment for GEJ and gastric cancer previously consisted of the intravenous administration of epirubicin, cisplatin and fluorouracil (ECF) or epirubicin, cisplatin and capecitabine (ECX) combination (Group 1). The new protocol (FLOT, F: 5-FU, L: leucovorin, O: oxaliplatin, T: docetaxel), included patients with resectable GEJ and gastric cancer who had a clinical stage cT or higher nodal positive cN+ disease (Group 2).

The aim of the current prospective pilot study exclusively for deep-seated soft tissue sarcomas (STS) was to evaluate efficacy and safety of bleomycin-based ECT using VEG (variable electrode geometry) electrodes. During a 2-year period, seven surgically inoperable STSs were treated at the University of Szeged, Department of Surgery in Hungary. Electrode placement was determined by software planning using preoperative imaging (CT/MRI) and intraoperative ultrasound.

Near-infrared fluorescence guided surgery: State of the evidence from a health technology assessment perspective.

Different applications of near-infrared fluorescence-guided surgery are very promising, and techniques that help surgeons in intraoperative guidance have been developed, thereby bridging the gap between preoperative imaging and intraoperative visualization and palpation. Thus, these techniques are advantageous in terms of being faster, safer, less invasive, and cheaper. There are a few fluorescent dyes available, but the most commonly used dye is indocyanine green.

The first Hungarian kidney transplantation was performed in 1962, in Szeged, by András Németh (1924–1999). The first semester at the university in Szeged started in 1921, so this year we celebrate the centenary. This event inspired authors to review the history of kidney transplantation in Szeged, remembering the first one and point of the cornerstones in the transplant program.

[Short history of liver surgery in the Department of Surgery of University of Szeged].

Introduction The authors introduce the history of liver surgery in Szeged on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Surgery Department's establishment. Material and methods After the initiation of liver surgery in Szeged by Professor Karácsonyi 1982 we are treating not only patients with benign and malignant focal liver diseases but also others with surgery required because of complications of portal hypertension. [Laparoscopic splenectomy in our practice at the University of Szeged Department of Surgery].

Since its introduction in 1991, laparoscopic splenectomy has been considered the gold standard in spleen surgery, and the advantages of this technique over open surgery are indisputable. The technique was initiated in the Department of Surgery, University of Szeged in 1994 and since then our working group has gained one of the greatest experiences in this field in Hungary. Based on our results, similarly to literature data, it may be established that laparoscopic splenectomy can be considered a surgical procedure with low morbidity after gaining the necessary experience.
