Active dendritic integrative mechanisms such as regenerative dendritic spikes enrich the information processing abilities of neurons and fundamentally contribute to behaviorally relevant computations. Dendritic Ca spikes are generally thought to produce plateau-like dendritic depolarization and somatic complex spike burst (CSB) firing, which can initiate rapid changes in spatial coding properties of hippocampal pyramidal cells (PCs). However, here we reveal that a morpho-topographically distinguishable subpopulation of rat and mouse hippocampal CA3PCs exhibits compound apical dendritic Ca spikes with unusually short duration that do not support the firing of sustained CSBs.

Background: The organism-wide effects of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) viral infection are well studied, but little is known about the dynamics of how the infection spreads in time among or within cells due to the scarcity of suitable high-resolution experimental systems. It has been reported that SARS-CoV-2 infection pathways converge at calcium influx and subcellular calcium distribution changes. Imaging combined with a proper staining technique is an effective tool for studying subcellular calcium-related infection and replication mechanisms at such resolutions.

Light-induced electron flow between reaction center and cytochrome bc complexes is mediated by quinones and electron donors in purple photosynthetic bacteria. Upon high-intensity excitation, the contribution of the cytochrome bc complex is limited kinetically and the electron supply should be provided by the pool of reduced electron donors. The kinetic limitation of electron shuttle between reaction center and cytochrome bc complex and its consequences on the photocycle were studied by tracking the redox changes of the primary electron donor (BChl dimer) via absorption change and the opening of the closed reaction center via relaxation of the bacteriochlorophyll fluorescence in intact cells of wild type and pufC mutant strains of Rubrivivax gelatinosus.

This study sought to compare the behavior of Treg subsets displaying different coexpression patterns of Neuropilin-1 (Nrp1) and Helios, under the influence of gut stress unrelated to hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, pretransplantation conditioning, and posttransplant gastrointestinal acute graft versus host disease (GI-aGvHD). Host CD4/CD25/Foxp3 Treg cells, identified by flow cytometry, were isolated from various tissues of mice affected by these stressors. Expression of CD25, CTLA-4, CD39, OX40, integrin-β7, LAG3, TGFβ/LAP, granzyme-A, -B, and interleukin-10 was compared in four Treg subsets displaying Helios or Nrp1 only, both or none.

In photosynthetic bacteria, the absorbed light drives the canonical cyclic electron transfer between the reaction center and the cytochrome bc complexes via the pools of mobile electron carriers. If kinetic or structural barriers hinder the participation of the bc complex in the cyclic flow of electrons, then the pools of mobile redox agents must supply the electrons for the multiple turnovers of the reaction center. The aim of our paper is to demonstrate and discuss in detail the endocranial bony changes suggestive of tuberculous meningitis (TBM) that were recorded in an adult female's (SPF15) skeleton. The bone remains were uncovered from a solitary grave from the Hun period (5th-century-CE) archaeological site of Solt-Polya-fok (Bács-Kiskun county, Hungary). During the macromorphological examination of the very incomplete and poorly preserved skeleton of SPF15, the inner surface of the skull displayed abnormally pronounced digital impressions (APDIs) and granular impressions (GIs).

The existing plant trait databases' applicability is limited for studies dealing with the flora and vegetation of the eastern and central part of Europe and for large-scale comparisons across regions, mostly because their geographical data coverage is limited and they incorporate records from several different sources, often from regions with markedly different climatic conditions. These problems motivated the compilation of a regional dataset for the flora of the Pannonian region (Eastern Central Europe). PADAPT, the Pannonian Dataset of Plant Traits relies on regional data sources and collates data on 54 traits and attributes of the plant species of the Pannonian region.

The recent classification of pediatric thrombotic microangiopathies (TMA) takes into consideration mechanisms of disease for guidance to targeted therapies. Hypoxia promotes angiogenesis, which is crucial for tumor growth, and induces malignant progression and increases the therapeutic resistance. Positron emission tomography (PET) enables the detection of the hypoxic regions in tumors using 2-nitroimidazole-based radiopharmaceuticals. We describe here a physicochemical study of the Sc(DO3AM-NI) complex, which indicates: (a) relatively slow formation of the Sc(DO3AM-NI) chelate in acidic solution; (b) lower thermodynamic stability than the reference Sc(DOTA); (c) however, it is substantially more inert and consequently can be regarded as an excellent Sc-binder system.

Age-related differences in dog sleep and the age at which dogs reach adulthood as indexed by sleep electrophysiology are unknown. We assessed, in (1) a Juvenile sample (n = 60) of 2-14-month-old dogs (weight range: 4-68 kg), associations between age, sleep macrostructure, and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) EEG power spectrum, whether weight moderates associations, and (2) an extended sample (n = 91) of 2-30-months-old dogs, when sleep parameters stabilise. In Juvenile dogs, age was positively associated with time in drowsiness between 2 and 8 months, and negatively with time in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep between 2 and 6 months.
