Solid-state zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) and aluminum-ion batteries (AIBs) are deemed as promising candidates for supplying power in wearable devices due to merits of low cost, high safety, and tunable flexibility. However, their wide-scale practical application is limited by various challenges, down to the material level. This Review begins with elaboration of the root causes and their detrimental effect for four main limitations: electrode-electrolyte interface contact, electrolyte ionic conductivity, mechanical strength, and electrochemical stability window of the electrolyte.

One-dimensional (1D) fibers have been widely used in composites reinforcement for microwave attenuation due to their outstanding mechanical and electromagnetic properties, especially in the axial direction. However, the precise control of fiber alignment in a polymer matrix remains a challenge. In this work, we successfully demonstrated the well-controlled alignment of silicon carbide nanowires (SiCNW) in a silicone matrix by using direct ink writing (DIW)-based 3D printing.

The water permeation of a ceramic membrane support is largely dependent on its level of open porosity, which can be however generally detrimental to the mechanical strength. In this work, low-cost kaolin nanoflakes were rationally composited with coarse alumina particles, and multichannel flat-sheet ceramic supports were successfully fabricated by extrusion and subsequent partial sintering.

The ability of additive manufacturing to print mesh structure was exploited to fabricate highly efficient filtration meshes for oil/water separation applications. Through Direct Ink Writing (DIW) technique, pure cellulose acetate with a mesh architecture can be created easily, using cellulose acetate/ethyl acetate solution as the ink and simply drying off the solvent in ambient conditions. Besides conventional mesh structures, more complex structures can be fabricated in order to manipulate the pore size and hence tune the separation properties of the mesh.
